Carmel River Inn - Carmel
This is a very nice 43 room motel in Carmel where I often stay; it's clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced by Carmel standards and much cheaper than the majority of Big Sur traveler's lodgings. The Carmel beach and mission are within walking distance and excellent restaurants and shopping are near by too. They have a main hotel building with pleasant comfy but kind of small rooms, a heated swimming pool and old Carmel style cottages with a country ambiance in a peaceful garden setting. It was recently acquired by new owners and is being renovated and run by Moonstone Properties who have a track record of operating and upgrading their lodgings in an exemplary fashion so I would look forward to nothing but improvement of the quality of this lodging.

Many of the Big Sur Pacific Highway One's traveler's lodgings are historic but Deetjens Big Sur Inn and Restaurant, founded in the 1930's, is on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior and is operated on a non-profit basis by the Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn Preservation Foundation; it is preserved in the fashion of the original Norwegian proprietor Helmuth Deetjen. This historic 20 room Norwegian-style property is charmingly rustic but not at all luxurious. The travel accommodations range from a small room which shares a bathroom to a separate redwood cabin like 2 story house with a fireplace and private deck overlooking the creek. The guest room doors lock only from the inside, and your neighbors can often be heard through the walls, of course there are no TVs or phones. Nevertheless, Deetjen's is a special charismatic Big Sur kind of place. Its buildings are nestled in the redwoods, and many have their own fireplaces or wood burning stoves. The restaurant at Deetjens offers breakfast and dinner 7 days a week and like most Big Sur restaurants the restaurant is expensive and has an extravagant ever-changing menu. There are no pets allowed and restrictions on children under 12 because of the thin walls.

Esalen Institute conducts residential workshops which emphasize potentialities and values of human existence. They offer weekend and 5-day human growth potential programs year round. The setting of Esalen could not be more spectacular with beautiful lawns lush green lawns to lounge on, breathtaking views of the Big Sur Pacific coast, a swimming pool, and the renowned natural hot springs bathhouse. There are spa type facilities like the hot tubs and natural hot springs and activities like massage but Esalen is not a luxury spa such as Big Sur's Ventana. There are motel type accommodations there and the prices are luxury but the lodging is not, it is rustic and red-woodsy. There is no restaurant at Esalen per say, the meals which are included with their package deals are served buffet style in a communal dinning room; the food there is said to be not gourmet but good and healthy. Although many people do vacation there (Esalen calls it a personal retreat and individuals can join in some of the workshops) Esalen Institute is not a travel resort or tourist attraction it is a workshop and retreat center, Esalen is always By Reservation Only. Unfortunately, it is never possible to just stop by and take a look around.
I stop at the Lucia Lodge almost every time I travel the Big Sur Pacific Coast Highway; the Lodge is half way between Cambria and Carmel right on the highway; for me it's a nice place to stretch legs, grab a cup of coffee from the lodges convenience store and use the handicapped accessible restrooms and I occasionally have lunch at the establishments restaurant. The food at the historic restaurant has always been good and the ocean view is incredible; when the weather cooperates they have an outside deck to relax and enjoy beautiful Big Sur coast Pacific Ocean views with your meal. The Lucia Lodge is another of the historic Big Sur lodgings it was founded in the 1930's even before the Pacific Coast Highway 1 was finished. The guest accommodations are 10 rustic cabins perched on the edge of a 300 foot cliff with stunning views of the rugged Big Sur coastline. There are three cabin styles which include the four original freestanding accommodations on the cliffside, a row of four newer cabins closer to the mountains, and the two most modern rooms located between the two. Each of these self-standing suites features a sitting room, a four-poster bed and a gas fireplace. As often the case with Big Sur lodgings the rooms have no television or telephones.

Julia Morgan designed Hearst Castle
and also "The Hacienda" a Spanish style ranch house and
hunting lodge for Hearst in 1929. "The Hacienda" in Jolon,
California is now a Guest Lodge, Restaurant and Lounge and is now
available to the public.
Guest Rooms: The rooms vary from single rooms to family rooms to 2 bedroom suites.
The prices for lodging at the Hacienda is quite reasonable and there is an adjoining bar/lounge. Also available on base which can be used by civilians who are Hacienda Guest Lodge patrons are many other recreational facilities; there is a restaurant "the Cable Cafe" (open 6AM - 9PM), a sports center, recreation center, swimming pool, bowling alley with dining and a movie theatre which are all on the post and nearby the Hacienda Guest Lodge. Guest Room Cost: * Price Range - $45.00 - $135.00
The Hacienda Guest Lodge & Club Hacienda
The guest accommodations at the Hacienda Guest Lodge consist of 11 somewhat worn guest rooms which have great character, a picturesque and reasonably priced restaurant (sorry restaurant currently closed 3/27/08) serving good food and a comfortable tavern. The Hacienda Guest Lodge differs from the other lodgings in this directory in a number of ways, the most notable being the location. This lodge is not close to the Pacific Coast Highway it is what some would call a treacherous 17 mile journey inland on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road across the Coast Mountain Range inside Fort Hunter-Liggett near Jolon, California. The Hacienda architecture and history are also has unique. The Hacienda Lodge was designed in the Spanish Mission style by architect Julia Morgan of Hearst Castle fame and in fact it once belonged to William Randolph Hearst; designed in 1929 it was originally Hearst Ranch housing and Hearst's so called guest hunting lodge. The truth is that Hearst was a bit of an environmentalist and animal lover, he didn't allow any hunting on his properties. Hearst did love to have to have guests at the Hacienda and Hearst's "hunting lodge" provided accommodations and entertainment for Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Teddy Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover to name a few.
The Nacimiento-Fergusson Road takes off south of Mill Creek; it is curvy with lots of blind curves and switch-backs, narrow, steep and subject to closures because of weather and operations at Fort Hunter-Liggett. If you take this drive you should expect it to take at least an hour and probably longer because it is so spectacular you will want to take pictures. I drive a sports car and love this road but if you need and alternative route the Hacienda can also be reached from Highway 101.

New Camaldoli Hermitage
This Big Sur lodging is not at all a hotel or resort it is a Catholic hermitage for Benedictine monks of the Camaldoli Congregation. The New Camaldoli Hermitage is near Lucia off Pacific Coast Highway 1 in the Santa Lucia Mountains, it is home to 20 Benedictine monks who live in seclusion. Visitors come for reflection and prayer and to hike the surrounding mountains. Guests may join the monks at services but it is not required. The lodging accommodations are Spartan; there is a retreat house with single rooms that include a twin bed, desk, dresser, half-bath (sink and toilet), private garden, private garden-patios with panoramic Pacific Ocean views and three vegetarian meals a day. The vegetarian meals are eaten privately in the room or patio. Monastery guests have available in a separate building several showers and a common kitchen where meals are picked up. Other available lodging accommodations are trailer hermitages which offer more privacy with full baths, kitchens, sun-decks and a variety of food items for light meals. The food is mostly vegetarian and said to be very good. The Hermitage is often booked solid through the summer season and requires reservations up to six months in advance for the retreat building and a year for the trailers. Cancellations are not uncommon and rooms can be secured with persistence. To maintain the atmosphere, guests are asked to refrain from using radios, typewriters, or musical instruments. Pets are not allowed.
