Description: By far Big Sur's most popular campground offering camping over 200 campsites a variety of shapes and sizes for both tents and RV's (water spigots are plentiful but no hookups, sanitation station); most in the beautiful deep shade of the towering forest some sites are right by the river, all have picnic tables and fire rings. Facilities include more than ample restrooms including hot showers and a laundry room. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has 1,006 acres of redwoods, conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows - plus open meadows. Park is bordered by redwood and oak forests, chaparral slopes of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Wildlife includes fox, raccoons, skunks, and birds, such as American dippers and belted kingfishers. Seasonally the park sponsors activities and the park also offers many day use areas for picnics, nature study and hikers can enjoy the many scenic trails, including a self-guided nature loop. Park has 8 miles of hiking trails; 210 miles of hiking trails in the nearby Ventana Wilderness (USFS). Overlooks provide spectacular views of the Big Sur Valley and the Big Sur River Gorge. Campsites are on the valley floor through which the Big Sur River flows. Campsites are nicely spread allowing for privacy; it can be a little cramped for bigger rigs, reservations advised check then for ample sized campsite. Group primitive campsite $125.00 per night, drive-in developed campsite $35.00 per night, drive-in premium campsite $50.00 per night, hike & bike special campsite $5.00.

Directions: The Big Sur Lodge and it's parking lot are easily spotted from PCH 1 and the turnoff for both are the same, then just follow the signs.
Camping Facilities: over 200 campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, accessible campsites, the Big Sur Lodge, day use areas, comfort station, convenience store, restaurant, coffee bar, dump station (campers only), hiking trails, information center, laundry room, nature center, parking, picnic areas, ranger station, restrooms, hot showers, swimming and wading in the Big Sur River, the lodge has a swimming pool for it's guests, public telephone, wireless internet.

Activities: Outdoor recreational activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, self guided nature trails, waterfall hike, (Pfeiffer Falls on Redwood Creek Hike) nature study, bird watching, forest exploration, wading and swimming; The Junior Ranger Program is a regularly scheduled interpretive program for children. Interpretive nature walks and talks for the whole family may also be available. The Big Sur Lodge offers additional fun actives like fine dining and an espresso coffee bar.
Close by Points of Interest: Centrally located in the Big Sur Valley there are numerous general stores, gas stations, motels, restaurants, shops and a bar located nearby and the facilities at the Big Sur Lodge should not be missed. Beaches and hiking are only short distances north or south along the Pacific Coast Highway 1. Also just south a few miles is the Henry Miller Memorial Library; a bookstore, art gallery, gift shop and location for many local events http://henrymiller.org/.
Pets & Misc. Regulations: At Pfeiffer Big Sur California State Park, dogs are allowed on leash (6 foot maximum) in the developed campground and day use areas. Dogs are also allowed on United States Forest Service (USFS) property, including Pfeiffer Beach. Dogs are not allowed on trails or in the Big Sur river gorge. In partnership with USFS, visitors accessing the USFS Ventana Wilderness via the Pine Ridge Trailhead at Big Sur Station may cross state park property with their dog on leash. Always inquire locally about specific regulations and changes.
Helpful Hints: Costs can vary but last time I stayed I payed $35.00 per night, $245.00 per week is I believe this is typical; during the busy season consecutive stays are limited to a week.
Pfeiffer Big Sur is the has the most handicapped accessible features and facilities of all the Big Sur campgrounds; accessible campsites, accessible restrooms and showers, handicapped accessible picnic areas, nature trails and more...
