Information: Salmon Creek Falls is located on one of the Big Sur Highways many 20 MPH curves so you might as well pullover, park and get out for this at this wonderful location; you might should even lock the car and take a short hike. Salmon Creek Falls is one of the best of Big Sur's Beautiful Natural Famous Waterfalls and is a Big Sur PCH 1 road trip must-stop. When the creek is really flowing the falls are phenomenal even when the creek is slow it is a pretty short walk to the pool at the bottom of the falls and the lush forest is very nice. If you want get away from the highway sometime to make more of it there is a trail head that will take you as far as you want to go into the Big Sur Wilderness.
Near Points of Interest: There is nothing here, no tourist services of travelers facilities; this is where people come when they really want to get away from it all. There is incredible scenery here and this is where the great southern Big Sur Coast trails start. There is a wonderful Salmon Creek Trail and then Buckeye and Soda Springs trails just a little north; then Cruickshank Trailhead is about 4 miles north of here. Hiking Big Sur has nice descriptions if you are looking for short day hike, Ventana Wilderness Alliance website has forums with reports from recent hikers and insights from those who have been there; you should always check this website and let Forest Service (Pacific Valley Station 805-927-4211) know before you venture too far back into the Big Sur backcountry; and Jack Glendening maintains an interactive VENTANA TRAIL MAP which has a wealth of current information on hiking, backpacking and camping along the wilderness trails.
Beach Access and Day Use Picnic Areas: No beach access or picnic areas near here to the north; the closest to the north is 9 miles to Willow Creek Beach access and day use picnic area. The closest picnic area to the south is only 4 miles, the Ragged Point Inn and Resort which is a wonderful place to picnic but to get to the beach requires a short but strenuous hike on the Ragged Point Inn nature trail. About 1 1/2 miles past the Ragged Point Inn and Resort is San Carpoforo Creek Beach which is quite a bit easier to access.
Near places to Eat: The closest place to eat to the north is 8 miles the Whale Watchers Café at Gorda Springs Resort. Just to the south 4 miles is the fabulous all glass Ragged Point Inn Resort Restaurant.
Near Hotel Lodgings & Resorts: The closest lodging to the north is 8 miles the cabins and motel at Gorda Springs Resort. Just to the south 4 miles is the wonderful rugged cliff top ocean view motel at the Ragged Point Inn Resort Pacific Ocean view cliff-top motel.
Near Campgrounds: One of my very favorite Big Sur Campgrounds, Plaskett Creek Campground is 11 miles to the north. Less than 9 miles to the north and offering very unique camping is Treebones Big Sur Yurt Resort & Campgrounds.
Other Facilities, Services or Activities: On the coast in this area the traveler services and tourist facilities are sparse and spread out and this won't change for the next 41 curvy miles.
