Click to enlarge this picture of the Lucia Lodge, Big Sur PCH 1, you must stop here...
Information: The tiny village of Lucia: I have driven between Monterey and San Luis Obispo on the Pacific Coast Highway many times and have seldom driven by the Lucia Lodge without stopping, at the very least to stretch my legs and use the easily accessible restrooms. Like many of the small resort areas along the highway they offer a little of everything, there is a great ocean view restaurant and free grassy picnic area; there is a little general store and gas pumps as well as some cliffside cottage rentals with phenomenal Pacific Ocean California Coast Views. Located on the PCH 1 about half way between San Simeon and Monterey offer me the perfect road trip rest stop.
Near Points of Interest: A great photo opportunity you won't want to miss comes 12 miles north at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park called McWay Falls; you should park your car in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park parking lot there are several nice trails in including the short one that leads to the McWay Falls overlook; there are trails that go into the beautiful redwood forest and 1.9 miles north of the Julia Pfeiffer Burns main entrance is the very popular coastal hiking area Partington Canyon.
Beach Access and Day Use Picnic Areas: About 14 miles north there is a trail to Partington Cove which is historic and beautiful but there isn't much of a beach at that location, there is really no good beach access anywhere near here, the high steep cliffs don’t allow it; the closest beach access north to a nice beach (Pfeiffer State Beach) is 25.5 miles the turnoff is at Sycamore Canyon; the beach access to the south is 3 miles at Limekiln Creek State Park. Lucia has a very nice grassy ocean view picnic area and there is wonderful picnic area in the redwoods at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park 12 miles ahead; the closest one to the south Limekiln Creek State Park.
Near places to Eat: My favorite Big Sur Ocean View restaurant Nepenthe is 19 miles north on the scenic PCH; Lucia has a very nice ocean view restaurant (try the fish & chips) and the closest restaurant to the south is the Whale Watcher Cafe at Gorda which is 13 miles or Treebones which is about 12 miles.
Near Hotel Lodgings & Resorts: Deetjen's Big Sur Inn and Restaurant is 12 miles ahead to the north and the Gorda Springs Cottages are 13 miles south.
Near Campgrounds: There is a tiny environmental tent campground with the much sought after highly coveted handful of ocean view tent campsites at Julia Pfeiffer Burns California State Park 12 miles ahead but it is always filled from reservations. The closest other campground is to the south 3 miles at Limekiln Creek State Park.; the closest one to the north would be Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park which is 14 miles north.
Other Facilities, Services or Activities: On the coast in this area the traveler services and tourist facilities are sparse and spread out and this won't change for the next 21 miles. |
