Mandatory Stop! This is a Big Sur Pacific Coast Highway 1 road trip must-stop! Park your car and get out if you are not hungry just stroll the property and views from the Nepenthe Restaurant and Café Kevah and you must at least browse around the wonderful gift shop / art gallery the Phoenix.
Photo Information: This is the view from the veranda at Nepenthe Restaurant on a clear late afternoon; the ocean below appears to have wisps of fog but the sky is clear blue and beautiful. Shortly the fog will probably thicken and the ocean will become shrouded with a blanket of fog a phenomena not uncommon in the summer and often quite beautiful when you are at a higher elevation looking down on it. This phenomenal view is one of the main reasons that Nepenthe is my favorite Big Sur Restaurant although the Ragged Point Inn and Resort Restaurant is a close second. Anyway there are actually two places to eat on this property, Nepenthe and Café Kevah, the Café is a located on an outdoor deck below that of Nepenthe and is more casual. There is also a very nice gift shop / art gallery, the Phoenix, which should not be missed.

As this stretch of highway 1 takes you briefly along the coast then turns inland taking you through the Redwood Forests up the Big Sur River Valley you come upon a number of clusters of little business areas all within a few miles of each other. They are all wonderful in their own ways and vary slightly but the one thing they have in common is they are there for you and have been for many years to do their best to serve the Pacific Coast Highway traveler and they generally do that well. Each is like a mini-resort or private campground offering a smorgasbord of traveler/vacationer facilities and services. If you stop and where you stop and what you do can depend on many things. What time of year it is, what are your needs and desires and what your budget i$.
